    - Intelligent data prioritization on both wired (StreamEngine) and wireless (WISH) networks
    - “Works with Windows Vista™” logo
    - Gigabit switch ports on both LAN and WAN sides
    - Wireless encryption at the touch of a button

    Wireless N Gigabit Router
The D-Link DIR-655 Wireless N Gigabit Router is an 802.11n (Draft 1.0) compliant device that delivers real world performance of up to 650% faster than an 802.11g wireless connection and also faster than 100Mbps wired Ethernet. By connecting the DIR-655 router to a cable or DSL modem, users will be able to share their high-speed Internet access with everyone on the network and create a secure wireless network to share photos, files, music, video, printers and network storage throughout their home.

    High-performance
The DIR-655 features the fastest processor in the RangeBooster N™ range, achieving ever higher throughput results between WAN and LAN networks.
Combined with the acclaimed QoS StreamEngine, this allows the DIR-655 to provide a better Internet experience by keeping Internet phone calls and online gaming smooth and responsive.
In addition, the router includes four Gigabit Ethernet switch ports for highest transfer speeds to other Gigabit capable devices such as a network attached storage device. For the first time, Gigabit connectivity is introduced on the WAN side as well, a unique feature ahead of its time in many countries, but which will be welcome by those who already have Ethernet as their means to access the Internet, for instance in Northern Europe.

Wireless LAN Intelligent Stream Handling (WISH) technology
The DIR-655 router includes Quality of Service (QoS), wirelessly as well as to and from the Internet (StreamEngine). It features WISH, which enhances the consumer's experience for gaming, HDTV and other media applications over a wireless connection by minimizing the disruptive effects of competing traffic on the wireless network. It automatically detects if audio, video or gaming content is being used on the wireless network and gives these applications priority over less time-sensitive traffic such as email or file transfers. It then adjusts priorities on the fly to ensure media content is transmitted without jitter or lag.
Furthermore, the router enforces a “good neighbour” policy, ensuring that it will not create interference for neighbouring networks. This is achieved by reducing the amount of radio spectrum used when detecting a legacy 802.11g/b network in the vicinity.

    Whole home coverage
The DIR-655 router is designed for use in bigger homes and for users that demand higher performance networking. Featuring 802.11n (Draft 1.0) technology with a 3x3 antenna design, the DIR-655 router provides superior whole home coverage whilst eliminating dead spots. By adding a Wireless N notebook or desktop adapter, users can stay connected to their network from virtually anywhere in their home.

    Simplified wireless security
The router supports the Wi-Fi Alliance’s standard for wireless security at the touch of a button. With Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ (WPS), the wireless network name (SSID) and encryption keys are automatically generated and broadcast to the client devices. Users do not have to memorise complicated passwords and key them in several times. This considerably simplifies the process of setting up security on the wireless network.

Product Code: DIR655 The D-Link DIR-655 is a top-performing router with useful extras like drive and printer sharing and a Wi-Fi guest zone. D-Links DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router was one of the first gigabit draft-2.0 routers, and its still one...
  • While its drive and printer sharing features have serious limitations, the D-Link DIR-655 would be one of our top picks even without them, thanks to its low price, great performance, easy setup, and handy guest access mode. Becky Waring Lowest online...

While some of the routers on test look like props from a sci-fi show, D-Link’s design is more sedate. The DIR-655 is fairly compact and its flashing blue LEDs are more discreet than others, which practically light up the room. A wall-mounting ki...

Several of these wireless routers actually require you to use a wired Ethernet connection when you initially set them up – which is annoying as the whole point of a wireless network is to avoid trailing wires from room to room. So we were pleasantly...

D-Link has decided to jump in and finally ship a three-stream ("450 Mbps") router. I wish they had chosen a different product number, though, because I can't tell you how many times I've typed 655 when I meant 665. I wasn't really impressed with TREN...
